| Drunk driving is a plague we have been faced with since the invention of the automobile. In 1996, the most recent year for which national statistics were available, the U. S. Department of Transportation reported chilling statistics on drunk driving:
* 17,126 people were killed in drunk driving related crashes. This represented more than 2 out of every 5 people killed on American highways. * More than 321,00 people were injured in such crashes. * About 3 out of 10 Americans will be involved in drunk driving related crashes at some point in their lives. In the same year, 66,522 charges of drunk driving were filed in Ohio courts 505 right here in Delaware County. These sobering statistics should remind all of us about the reason for our efforts to curb drunk driving and to punish those found guilty of such offenses. Over the past 20 years, Ohio has begun to take a tough stand on drunk drivers in particular, repeat drunk drivers in an effort to avoid this senseless carnage. New laws have given police, prosecutors, and courts innovative tools with which to detect, apprehend, and punish those who, for whatever reason, persist in placing themselves and others at risk by driving under the influence of alcohol. Since our inception, the Delaware Municipal Court has been helping Ohio wage the fight against drunk driving. While a court cannot be involved in catching the drunk driver, it can and should insure that proper punishment is meted out to the convicted offender. Judge Michael C. Hoague, a former municipal court prosecutor, has worked with the police and prosecutors to insure that those found guilty of drunk driving are duly brought to justice. The database on this website serves two important criminal justice purposes. First, it furthers deterrence by making public the names and sentences of those found guilty of multiple drunk driving offenses. Second, it aids law enforcement and corrections efforts by making the actual judgment entries and orders available in an accessible format.
